There. It's out. I'll let that sink in for a minute.
I know many of you, especially (I would bet) the customers who come to the shop are wondering why. The shop is always crazy busy, right? I know. I've had many thoughts about how much I would share, but I have always been very open about my life, so I'm going to be open here as well!
The shop - both online and our brick & mortar - have exceeded our expectations like crazy. In this economic downturn in which we started the business, we have had nothing but great success. I think that makes this all the harder. Our customers are fantastic and SO supportive, making this shop - which is my dream - a complete crazy place of joy.
I have been suffering from migraines for years, which cause visual disturbances. Over the past few weeks, I've had more visual disturbances than normal and after one scary episode in which I couldn't see at all out of one eye, I went to the doctor. Very long story short, I have a condition in which I have excess fluid in my brain which, in turn, is causing a host of other problems, such as swollen optic nerves, etc. I've been told that if I don't take some fairly drastic steps to change my life, I could end up blind and am a significantly increased risk of a stroke. There are many ways to try and put a band-aid on this condition, but in order to cure it, I need to make my health my first priority and (all of you blog readers who are regulars, I am sure you are going to know how much I LOVE this!!) I have to lose weight. A LOT of weight, and in a healthy way. Apparently, weight loss is the cure. I would like to say, for the record, that I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW MUCH THIS SUCKS.
Accordingly, working 14 hour days, 7 days a week is not part of the cure. It's become increasingly difficult for me to work these kinds of hours, as well, as the headaches have gotten more intense and have made me fairly sick.
So - very long story as short as I can make it - I am shutting down the fabric division of Buttercuppity. I will still have Buttercuppity studio, however, where I will be making all the gorgeous and yummy handmade things that Buttercuppity started with - this will allow me the flexibility I need, however, to get well. And I really, really am committed to getting well.
This has all happened within the past few weeks, so it's been a hard adjustment. Buttercuppity Fabric and our retail hop shas been my dream come true. It really has! I've been so incredibly fortunate, and I've met the most AMAZING people online and in person - you all have given me such a great gift of friendship and acceptance, and I cannot thank you enough for the opportunites you have given me. To be able to help you create gorgeous, fun things for yourselves, your homes, your families and your lives has been an incredible gift. Thank you - THANK YOU!! - so much for all the love you have given me. :) You have no idea how much it means to me, and how much I appreciate it.
So what does this mean? Well, what it means right now is that Buttercuppity Fabric is having and amazing sale. I've updated the prices on all our fabrics online- and most of it is $5.50 a yard. Knits, Voiles and Home dec is one sale too!! I've updated the quantities, so you can buy up as much as you'd like!
EVERYTHING in the shop needs to go, and I will update Pattern prices this evening, so they will be 40% off retail. Big sales inevitably bring big questions, so I will try to proactively answer them:
The Details
- Everything must go! I will not be lowering prices any more. My goal is to break even, not lose money.
- You can shop online or in our Spokane shop - prices are the same in both places.
- If you have purchased from Buttercuppity Fabric recently, please understand that no refunds will be given on those purchases.
- Shipping is based on the regular price of fabric - not the sale price. No shipping discount will be given.
- Sales can cause some craziness. If, for some reason, there is a bolt or fabric shortage, I will fill your order with the fabric I do have and will refund your money via Paypal.
- I expect some shipping delays. Please be patient!
Much, much love and many, many thanks to all of you. :)

My dear sweet friend - I am so sorry you have to do this but I am so glad you are taking your doctors medical advise. You are much more important than any store. I love you and am here if you need anything. :) Julie
ReplyDeleteI'm praying for you Ari. Get well sister :)
ReplyDeleteI hope putting this "out there" is a gigantic relief and that you can now focus on what's important: your health. Ari, your open heart and beautiful spirit and infectious laugh have brightened the lives of everyone who knows you. We want you to be around a long, long, looooonnng time. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is absolutely the RIGHT DECISION!! If you need help packaging orders or whatever, I am happy come down after work and help out.
xoxoxoxo
Now, that really sucks!
ReplyDeleteBut it is also the only right thing to do! Health should always be the top priority and not something "at the end of the list". And it doesn't help anyone if you ruin yourself trying to make us happy by selling us fabric (and you did make me happy! And I would love to shop at your online shop right now but my fabric budget right now looks like a gigantic black whole :) )
I hope you get better soon!
Thank you for telling us :)
Greetings from Germany,
Johanna
Ari -
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear about your health and I hope that you get well soon! Though this is hard, (for you and all of us :) ) closing the store is the right decision. I'll be including you in my prayers.
Oh Ari, I do hope you get better soon! I'll miss you and your amazing shop but your health is the top priority. You'll be in my thoughts!!
ReplyDeleteThis makes me so sad! I LOVE your shop, and mostly your taste in GREAT fabrics. With sacrifice comes great blessing, and your sight is way more important than the store. You are awesome, Ari!!!!
ReplyDeleteMy prayers are with you Ari. I am so sorry to hear that you have to put your dreams on hold like this. I wish you nothing but health and happiness, love and best wishes.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to hear about your health problems, and closing your shop, but you have to take care of yourself. That is the most important thing!
ReplyDeletepraying for you my dear fabric lady! you get yourself well but i will have to admit, my heart belongs to buttercuppity fabrics and it will be so hard to replace my supplier of loverly fabrics. so i wont. i'll just keep praying for your recovery and strength. i so wish we could live closer, i think we'd make great friends. <3 the crafty mermaid
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm so bummed, especially now that I've finally made it in to your beautiful, cheerful store. BUT you are doing the right thing in taking care of your health.
ReplyDeleteHope to be in on Tuesday!
I just stopped by and picked up a few pretties. I hope things smooth out for you soon. Your health is so important. You will be in our families prayers

Oh, Ari! I am so sorry to hear this. I hate that you are suffering health-wise but I admire the courage and resolve you are displaying to shut down something you love so that you can completely heal. I have loved shopping with you and even though I placed an order late this week, I am shopping again this afternoon! Much love to you as you start a new journey.
ReplyDeleteOh Ari! this kills me! I love you AND your shop! I hope you keep in touch! And to see you at Harvest Treasures!! XOXO
ReplyDeleteAri, I am a "new" follower of your blog and shop, but my sister, Hannah, has bought fabric several times from you. My cousin, Valerie, lives in Spokane and has also visited your shop (my sis and I live in St. Louis, MO).
ReplyDeleteI am so so sorry to hear about your health problems, but I am sure you are making the right decision. You need to take care of you right now and although it must have been horribly hard to make the decision to close your dream shop, just know that what needs to happen is happening. For some reason or another, this is your path right now. We love your stuff and will keep you in our prayers. Take loving care!
Wow. I am kind of speechless... I just told a friend this week to email you and see if you'll have a fabric that doesn't come out until October because I was sure you would've ordered it! This is so sad, and I'm so sorry for you Ari! But at least you know that once you get yourself healthy again you have faithful shoppers and fans waiting for your return to the retail fabric world!
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry to hear this news of your health but am hopeful for you. You have some things you can do to help the situation and you MUST do them! Of course you must. A visit to your shop was on my list for this summer...wasn't meant to be I guess. Take care of YOU!
ReplyDeleteAri, I am so very sorry to hear of your condition :-( I hope you have a successful (and quick of course) weight loss and better health!! Now, my selfish side wants to know...as soon as this happens, would you consider re-opening? :-) Best of Luck to you in your journey :-) ~bev
ReplyDeleteYour health is definitely first priority. I am so sorry to see you go. Best of luck to you, I understand how hard losing weight is but it certainly is not impossible. I am sure I speak for others when I say I hope to see you again in the near future. Health and happiness to you.
ReplyDeleteOh Ari I am so sorry to hear this, please take care of yourself! And certainly keep in touch! {{hugs}}
ReplyDeleteAri, oh my goodness, I am so, so sorry!!! you are an amazing person and business woman, and I'll be praying for you!! I have no doubt that you will excell at the unfortunate journey of losing weight!! Call if you need any support in any way whatsoever girl! Love to you and Michael,

Oh, Ari. I have a pit in my stomach over this. I'm so sorry for what you're going through and wish you all the best. Please take care. :(
ReplyDeleteI bought some fabric, hope it helps. I'll be patient on shipping. On the upside, you'll probably be in really good shape soon!
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to hear that -- I was hoping to buy my nursery fabric for my first baby there. Prayer for your health to improve and thanks for having such a fabulous store.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear about your health issues, please take care of yourself and do what the doctor says. Prayers for you and a speedy recovery.
